InternScout Partners with Taycor Financial to Create International Business Exchange Program

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 19, 2012) Taycor Financial has announced the launch of an international internship program in partnership with InternScout. The program will focus on postgraduate as well as current university level students studying business, finance, or marketing.

InternScout, one of the leading placement agencies in the U.S. has more than 200,000 registered international students, and recent graduates throughout Europe and abroad. With offices in San Diego, CA and Leipzig, Germany, InternScout’s mission is to provide international students placement with premier U.S. partner companies. Their goal is to provide an opportunity to exchange business culture, and create long-term relationships around the world.

“Today, innovation is driven though international exchange of knowledge, resources and, most importantly, people. International interns have always played a big role in our California communities. There are many talented, extremely driven and well educated young people who join the California and U.S. skilled workforce as interns on the J-1 visa” said Kristin Ottonello, U.S. Program Manager for InternScout.

She went on to say, “these interns and trainees often return to their home country, just to come here again to start their own companies or apply for jobs in San Diego research institutes and high-tech companies. In any case, international interns very often secure positions in global companies in both their home country or abroad. They also tend to become actively involved in- or have access to- their home-based trade groups, government agencies and business development corporations, further improving the global network and international business for California.”

Accepted interns will be provided with six month to one year work and training experience at Taycor Financial, a premier equipment leasing and financing company headquartered in Los Angeles, CA. “Interns will work within the business development department and participate in strategic planning, marketing initiatives, and gain real-world experience in U.S. business culture” said Michael Hong, Director of Business Development for Taycor Financial.

“Taycor Financial has invested a great deal of time and effort into creating educational and experience focused learning objectives. Our commitment to visiting international interns is to share an open culture, and provide a real-life business perspective of the current American business structure. Our desire is to host students and recent graduates, and help them launch their careers with solid training and mentorship” he added.

InternScout Joins Fans at San Diego Chargers Game

On Sunday, December 18th, InternScout showed its San Diego pride by attending a National Football League (NFL) football game at Qualcomm Stadium between the San Diego Chargers and the Baltimore Ravens. This match was set to be a close one and, although the Ravens brought a good number of their own fans, the presence of Chargers fans was devastating. The San Diego Chargers home games can bring almost 70,000 fans to Qualcomm Stadium in one night!

The Chargers took the win with a final score of 34-14! The stadium was thrilled with the outcome and you could really feel the sense of the community surrounding the stadium.

So, how do all these fans get to- and from- the game? While some of them drive themselves, many fans use the San Diego Trolley. The Trolley’s Green Line stops in several locations in San Diego and increases its pick up times to every 5-7 minutes on game day and drops fans off right outside of the stadium!

The trolley provides services to downtown, the Gaslamp Quarter, the San Diego Convention Center, Petco Park (San Diego’s stadium for the professional baseball team, the Padres), and Fashion Valley. It is also used by many interns and employees of San Diegoto get to- and from- work. It is an efficient and affordable way to get around. InternScout Cheers on Team USA at America’s Cup World Series

Last Thursday, November 17th, Team InternScout visited Teams China, Team USA, and Team France at the 34th America’s Cup World Series taking place on the beautiful San Diego Bay.

The America’s Cup, one of the oldest running international sporting events, will culminate in San Francisco Bay with a duel between 72-foot catamaran multi-hulled sailing boats.  The term “America’s Cup” refers to the trophy, one of the oldest in sports, given out to the winner of the sailing race – the first trophy was presented in 1851.

InternScout’s Program Manager, Kristin and Program Coordinator, Flavia watched live as first and second-place boats, France and China sailed into view.  “It was just incredible that such a significant international event was taking place right down the street from the InternScout office!,” said Kristin.

After the race, Team InternScout paused for a snapshot in front of the supposedly haunted sailing ship, the Star of India, where legend has it that ghosts of several unfortunate sailors and passengers haunt many of the decks and cabins.  According to Flavia, the world’s oldest active iron-hull ship, built in 1863, is just one of the many wonderful attractions that draws tourists from around the world to visit San Diego.

Accepting an Internship Offer

After several phone and webcam interviews and potentially weeks of waiting, it can be hard not to immediately accept the first internship offer you receive.  Even if you want an internship in the U.S. so badly that you would be willing to accept almost anything – and anywhere, it is important to take the time to consider the offer carefully before accepting it.   Here are 4 things to consider before saying yes:

Give it a few days:  Companies understand that you need time to consider their offer before making a decision so it’s ok to respectfully request time to think about it.  While you shouldn’t make them wait too long, 2-3 days to think it over is perfectly reasonable and often expected.

Ask more questions: While having an internship is important, it is equally important to know the specifics.  Don’t be afraid to ask questions:  Is the internship paid?  How much is the stipend amount?  Does the internship come with accommodation?  Will the company provide assistance with the necessary visa fees?  How many interns has the company had in the past?  While these questions shouldn’t make or break your decision they can definitely influence  it – especially if you are considering multiple offers.

Review the training plan:  Ask the company to provide a description of the training plan or an overview of your tasks and activities in writing (if you will be applying for the J-1 visa they will need to provide this information eventually anyway).   If the company has had international interns in the past, ask them if you can review a copy of a previous  intern’s training plan as well.  This should give you a better idea of what to expect.

Consider your goals:  Think about where you want to be in 5, 10, or 15 years; will this internship help you to get there?  Do the tasks and activities match your educational background, skills, and interests?  Consider both the short term and long term benefits of accepting the internship, as well as the company and department.  Sure, an internship for a music label or a top PR firm sounds hot, but not if you will be answering phones and getting coffee all day.

How to Create Internships that Attract the Best and Brightest for Your Company

Interns are some of the best and brightest young minds out there on the job market. Interns are known for injecting new ideas, passion, and energy into businesses all while providing a training ground for new employees.  Have you ever wondered how to attract the best and brightest from around the world to work for you company?

Every business is different and has its own unique set of needs; however, there are several factors involved in being sure that a company sets up an internship program that will attract great interns.

First, and foremost, your internship program must offer challenging work.  By definition, an internship is an opportunity for an intern to learn on the job and take the skills he or she learns on to future employment.  Work that includes:  photocopying, filing, data entry and taking notes, no matter how big and impressive the company, is unlikely to attract many interns.  A good internship, where interns are put on projects that can be included on a resume will go a long way towards attracting top notch talent.  Be sure to describe the exciting and challenging work when you write the job description, and also expand upon it in the interview process.

Second, providing access to decision makers within a company and advertising this in the job posting will increase the chances of getting both more and better candidates applying for an internship.  The more an intern can be involved in how a business actually runs by working side-by-side with decision makers – versus low level management; the more desirable the internship opportunity becomes.

And third, make your internship program an institution.  You want to have an internship program that ultimately sells itself via word of mouth from past interns who have worked for your company and the schools and organizations from which they are a part of.  By providing a challenging work environment and an opportunity for interns to work side-by-side with decision makers you are creating an excellent learning opportunity for the intern.  But you must also provide the intern with networking opportunities, excellent references and opportunities for advancement in one’s career upon completion of a successful internship.  By providing a well rounded internship opportunity you are going to create a legacy of interns and schools and organizations they belong to, who refer future “A” player interns to your company or organization.

By creating an internship program that provides an incredible learning opportunity for the intern, a business or organization will inevitably attract great interns.  In turn, as the internship program grows and word gets out to both potential interns and the schools’ professors and career services centers that an internship with your company is one that the intern will learn and grow at, more interns will be scrambling for an opportunity to work with your business.

Simply following these strategies your company or organization will be able to go out and continually find interns from around the globe to help you grow your business or organization.

Choosing Internship Goals

Whether you are looking for an internship in your home town, or seeking internships abroad – for any internship to be successful, you need to establish clear and measurable goals before deciding on an internship offer.

Many companies set goals and criteria for their interns in order to give guidelines for establishing a successful program. Why not do the same? What are your personal criteria to judge whether or not an internship offer is a good one?

Here are 9 goals you should keep in mind when selecting an internship:

Meaningful Experience. Whether you have already worked full time before or just during summer college breaks, an internship should give you meaningful work experience related to your degree or future profession. It is this experience which will show future employers that you not only have theoretical knowledge, but can also use it in practice.

Exploration: Most likely, you are not completely sure which career you would like to do in the future, simply because you aren’t familiar with what it involves. An internship allows you to test a profession without fully committing to any particular company or job field. You can also explore different niches within an industry which could provide new directions for your future career – you never know what your internship will bring!

Learn, learn, learn: Your internship is not a classroom; getting the theoretical knowledge is one thing, but what do companies do in reality? Your internship should allow you to learn about an industry, an organization, or a specific profession.

The Big Picture: Theory can only teach you about certain steps in a process – it is the internship, however, that will give you the big picture of how it all comes together. Your internship should allow you to see how processes are connected and related to each other!

Polish your Resume: The more relevant experiences you can show in your resume, the better your chances for a real job offer later on. Choose an internship that will give you a competitive advantage over other future job applicants who may only have the theoretical background.

Gain references and mentors: A successful internship should also provide you access to strong references and a solid mentor within the field of your prospective career.  The mentor should guide you on your way to a great career by providing you with their personal knowledge of the industry – the more references and mentorships you can show, the better.

NETWORK: Most jobs are based on referrals and recommendations, so be sure your internship allows you to connect with as many people as possible!  Networking and knowing the important people in the company, and industry, will make your career entry much easier!

Foot in the Door: Choosing an internship with a company that could become prospective employer is a great entry strategy. You can prove yourself to an organization, even if they aren’t currently hiring for your dream job. Nothing is better for a job offer than getting referrals from the company itself or having your internship be the job interview!

Regular and Effective Evaluation: The more you ask, the more you learn. In the end, an internship should give you an idea of what potential employers would think of your personal profile.  The company should provide regular and meaning evaluations to let you know what you need to work on in the future. Make sure that you regularly receive feedback from your supervisor so that you can see whether you are on track.

Get a job: Never forget the ultimate goal: to get a good job!

No matter what your goals for successful internship, you need to set them before choosing your internship. Think about the factors that are most important to you and select the five goals that are the most important. By doing this, you can focus on what you really want to achieve. Communicate your internship goals to your company and your supervisor so that you can work on reaching them together.
