Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Why should I use InternScout?

Over the past ten years, InternScout has placed over 10,000 students and recent graduates in internships at U.S. companies in order to build real-world knowledge and skills and gain a competitive edge in the global career market. Our business relationships and connections in the U.S. internship market provide us with intimate access to internships that are not otherwise available to you.

Navigating the U.S. visa process and arriving in a foreign country alone can also be a difficult and intimidating experience. When you apply for a U.S. internship with InternScout, we provide you with personal contact and assistance through the duration of your internship program. InternScout staff are always available to answer your questions and provide personalized support and guidance.

2. Why do I need a J-1 Visa? What is the DS-2019 Form?

The US Department of State mandates that all foreign students coming to the U.S. for an internship do so on a J-1 visa. InternScout works directly with U.S. Department of State designated J-1 Visa sponsoring organizations and will assist you in all aspects of this process.

The DS-2019 Form is the Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status in the U.S. This form is provided by a J-1 sponsoring organization and will allow you to receive your J-1 visa and enter the United States.

3. How long will it take for InternScout to locate my internship?

InternScout will begin the process of arranging your U.S. internship as soon as we receive your completed Registration Form (provided to you by one of our Program Coordinators) . We recommend beginning your application 4 to 6 months before your desired internship start date; this will allow InternScout enough time to locate a U.S. company, assist you in obtaining the J-1 visa, and provide enough time to secure housing and transportation for your arrival in the U.S.

4. Are the internships paid?

Most internships are unpaid, however this depends on the company. Some companies provide assistance with housing and accommodation, however this should also not be expected. When you apply with InternScout you may specify if you would prefer a paid or unpaid internship, however we recommend that you do not plan on receiving payment as to not limit your potential internship offers.

5. What does your program cost?

Program fees vary between the positions posted on our website and our Specialty Internship Programs.  Please contact us directly or click “Request Info” above for more information regarding pricing.

6. Do I need to be fluent in English to apply for a U.S. internship?

Fluency is not required, however your English ability should be intermediate to advanced.  You must be able to follow instruction during your internship and perform required tasks without requiring a translation into your native language.  You should be able to speak basic English (conversational) with relative ease.

7. When will I know more information about the U.S. company?

If your application is selected for an interview by a U.S. company, InternScout will provide you with information about the company and assist you in preparing your the interview.  Unfortunately, we cannot provide you with any information about the U.S. companies unless you are selected for an interview.

8. What happens if my internship doesn’t work out?

InternScout will decide on a case-by-case basis if we are able to relocate you to a new internship based on the individual circumstances.
